How Stryker’s Acquisition of care.ai Strengthens Its Push Toward Smart, Connected Hospitals

Stryker to acquire care.ai to elevate virtual care workflows and expand its healthcare IT leadership

Portage, Michigan – August 12, 2024 – Stryker (NYSE: SYK), a global leader in medical technology, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire care.ai, a rising innovator in AI-powered virtual care workflows, ambient intelligence, and smart room technologies. This move accelerates Stryker’s strategic vision of delivering intelligent, connected care solutions across hospital systems.

This acquisition positions Stryker to significantly expand its digital health ecosystem, addressing pressing challenges such as clinician burnout, staffing shortages, and rising workplace safety concerns. By incorporating care.ai’s technology into its existing Vocera platform and medical device portfolio, Stryker will offer hospitals an integrated, enterprise-wide ecosystem for dynamic clinical workflows and real-time patient monitoring.

care.ai’s ambient intelligence platform automates time-consuming processes through AI-driven sensors that detect and respond to patient needs. These capabilities help clinical teams spend more time with patients, reduce administrative burden, and improve overall care efficiency. The acquisition aligns with the broader healthcare shift toward smarter, proactive care environments.

“The acquisition of care.ai is a clear reflection of our long-term strategy,” said Andy Pierce, Group President of MedSurg and Neurotechnology at Stryker. “This partnership will accelerate our vision of smart healthcare infrastructure—equipping caregivers with AI-driven decision tools that improve patient outcomes and staff well-being.”

The deal is subject to customary closing conditions. Until the transaction is finalized, Stryker and care.ai will continue to operate independently.
